    Ad-Aware 2008 Free Version

    Question 1:

    • I have been using Ad-Aware for a couple of years.

    Question 2:

    • Ad-Aware downloaded 18.2mb installation file. Installed the application used 18.8mb after all updates. When running the application it used 77mb of memory.

    Question 3:

    • Ad-Aware, Smart Scan took 3 minutes and Full Scan took around 4 minutes. This was on a Dual Core 2.2Ghz Workstation. Sata II Hard Drives. Now of course theses times will change with the amount of data and software you have installed. This was tested on a clean installation of Windows XP Pro.
    • Ad-Aware, on a Toshiba Satellite Notebook, Duo Core 1.6Ghz 2G ram and a 160G hard drive, 30G space used on hard drive. Smart Scan took 6.57 minutes to run and for a full scan it took 14.02 minutes. Detected 45 Tracking Cookies both times.

    Question 4:

    • Ad-Aware, With the free version you have to manually update every time you use it and there are usually new updates.

    Question 5:

    • Ad-Aware, I find the software easy to use. Click on Scan and pick the type of scan you want to do and let it do its thing. To update click on WebUpdate then Update and now your definition file will be updated.

    Question 6:

    • Interesting thing though, on the Toshiba Laptop I run SuperAntiSpyware first and it found 12 spyware, then I run Ad-Aware and it found 47, I cleaned with Ad-Aware and then run SuperAntiSpyware again and this time it found 3 spyware cookies. Then I run the new AVG Antivirus/Spyware Free Version 8 and it found 78 Tracking Spyware Cookies. So what I have put this down too, is different software seem to check for different Spyware, Maybe one day I will get a answer from the different Spyware company’s and see what they say about it.

    Question 7:

    • Haven’t needed to contact support on this product.

    Question 8:

    • Ad-Aware, If you purchase the Pro Version it now includes Antivirus Protection, Host file protection and Process Watch. It will also updates automatically.

Usually I try and run the Spyware utilities every couple of weeks or more often if I see something strange with my browser. Now with Antivirus Software now checking for Spyware maybe my checking will change.

For Spyware I use spybot search and destroy http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html and Lavasoft ad aware http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php which seems useless since the release of the current version (never finds anything on my computer when I use it now).
